More than 49 million Americans live in households that don’t have enough food to feed their families every day, yet our country produces enough food to feed everyone.
If you live in one of those households, you are not alone. 211 can connect you with programs that can help.
211 provides information about school lunch programs and summer food service programs for children. You can get information on government-sponsored programs that reduce hunger and find out if you qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which helps millions of Americans purchase food through grocery stores, farmers markets and restaurants. To learn more about the benefits of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), which provides food and nutrition education to new mothers, infants and children up to age five, contact your local 211 chapter.
Diane, a 71-year-old living in East Baltimore was in desperate need and called the 211 Maryland United Way Helpline on Friday during winter storm Jonas. She had no food or money in her home. Our 211 call specialist discovered that Diane uses a wheelchair and is unable to leave her home during bad winter weather. Everyone she normally relies on for food had fallen through. No one was returning her calls. She was out of options.
Thankfully, 211 was there to help. Call specialists reached out to partner organizations and found two incredibly dedicated volunteers who ventured through the blizzard Saturday morning to deliver food to Diane. The volunteers left their contact information to ensure Diane could call them for any follow-up needs. She was deeply moved.
“God bless them for the rest of their life!” she said about the 211 team and volunteers.
